Taronga vs Sydney Zoo: The Ultimate "Kids' Choice"

Kids playing

The rivalry has officially peaked in 2026. For decades, Taronga was the only game in town. Now, "Sydney Zoo" (located in Western Sydney/Bungarribee) has matured into a formidable challenger. We took three families with kids ranging from toddlers to teens to both parks in the same week to see which one actually wins the "Kids' Choice" award.

The "Flat" Advantage

Sydney Zoo's biggest advantage for parents is that it is 100% flat. No hills, no cable cars, no staircases. You can push a stroller from the entrance to the lions and back to the exit without breaking a sweat. At Taronga, by 2:00 PM, most parents look like they've just completed a mountain marathon. If your kids are "runners" or if you have heavy strollers, Sydney Zoo is physically much easier to navigate.

The "View" Factor

However, when we asked the kids what they remembered most, Taronga always won. Why? The "Sky Safari" cable car. To a 6-year-old, flying over the top of the elephant enclosure is a core memory. Sydney Zoo feels like a very high-end park, but it lacks the "magic" of Taronga’s harbor setting. In 2026, Taronga has also upgraded its "Nura Diya" Australia section, which provides a much more immersive bush-walk feel than the more clinical enclosures at Western Sydney.

Our 2026 Recommendation

If you are a local living in the West or have physical mobility concerns: **Sydney Zoo**. If you are a tourist or want the "wow" factor for your kids' photos: **Taronga Zoo**. There is simply no substitute for seeing a giraffe with the Opera House in the background.

In terms of pricing, Sydney Zoo is slightly cheaper, and parking is free (Taronga's parking is famously expensive at $22+ per day). But for most families visiting Sydney, the $30 extra for the ferry and the "iconic" status of Taronga usually tips the scales. Just make sure you bring comfortable walking shoes for the kids—those Taronga hills are no joke!
